Chapter Nineteen

Saturday, May 18th

Never being home had its perks. Like when company came, there wasn’t much cleaning to do. Allie zipped around her little house, sliding a dust rag over countertops and any other surface that looked like it needed it. Top to bottom, that took twenty minutes. At five-thirty she traded sweatpants and her Lady Sinners tank top for dark jeans, a purple, frilly, short-sleeved blouse, and wedge sandals. She shook her hair out of a ponytail and brushed it straight, then swiped on some lip gloss. Good to go.

Dave Matthews crooned from the hidden stereo speakers while she set two places at the kitchen table. These mechanical things kept her mind off the real issue—she was dating a patient. No. Ex-patient. And one date didn’t qualify as dating. Hearing that from a client, she’d call it denial. For now, she’d call it a moral loophole.

Her cell phone rang, and her heart jumped into action. Was he having second thoughts? Relief and disappointment shared space in her head until she answered and Mac’s voice burst onto the line.

“Is he there yet? What’s he wearing? You changed out of the sweats, right?”

“Jesus, Mac, you scared me. No, he’s not here yet, and yes, I changed out of the sweats.”

“Hey, I know you. I had to check.”

“I know how to date.”

Her friend snickered. “You knew how to date. After Stanford, your lover was named Grad School, and the dress code’s different.”

Allie tipped her head back and took a slow breath. “I promise. I’m so girly you’d roll your eyes.”

“Good. I expect full details the minute he leaves, and I’m up late. I’m also up early if the date should last until breakfast.”

“Mac!”

“Hey, if you’re so determined to make it just one date, you might as well get the full experience.”

Allie rubbed her forehead. “I will talk to you sometime in the undetermined future when I have forgiven you.”

“You love me.”

“Bye, Mac.” She dropped her phone back in her shoulder bag just before a car pulled into the driveway.

Shane parked in the short, narrow driveway and stared at the butter-yellow dollhouse in front of him. Cute was the first word that came to mind. It didn’t entirely jive with the sleek, sporty, sexy image he had of Allie, but something about it fit just right. Cozy. Comfortable. A refreshing piece of the Midwest just outside of Vegas, not unlike Allie herself. The entire neighborhood had that vibe, and it felt like his home back East. Pleasant Valley Sunday on a Saturday night.

His big Explorer looked a little out of place amid the street of small sedans, but no one seemed to notice. He collected the Tupperware containers from the passenger seat along with the bottle of wine and hip-checked the door closed.

Allie must have heard him coming because she appeared and waved him inside before he’d taken two steps away from his car. He almost stumbled staring at her while trying to navigate her porch. Date Allie wasn’t a big stretch from Work Allie except … girlier? Sexier.
